So now that I'm living on government pensions, I have found it very difficult to eat well. Organic foods in the supermarkets are completely not affordable and local farmers markets are scarce in winter around here. For those of you that can travel, the north St Lawrence Market is open with fresh farm goods every Saturday morning but all the rest of Toronto's fabulous markets are typically closed until late spring so I have been forced to deal with supermarkets. To make matters worse, the only supermarket that i can get to in my mobility cart is a Food Basics. Thank goodness for our new management and it is now a clean and nice place but I still have to insist upon reading every label and loudly letting others know about the chemicals in our packaged foods.
I figure the best place to start is the food that we use to start our day. I started to read all the cereal boxes and going on line for hours to find out what all this crap was that they actually DO admit. The salt, sugars and sprayed on vitamins were the least of my concerns. I wanted to know what BHT and TSP were as i quickly assumed that they were not a natural product that i was meant to consume.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR
When i was researching this blog I mentioned to friends and family that they should avoid these product especially cheerios as a beloved snack for kids. One reaction summed it up for most people these days as we have become so desensitized to all the constant bad news about our food. He said,"yes but the amount is so small that it should not affect us". NO NO NO. Please don't turn a blind eye to this. Each manufacturer is putting a little poison into all our food. A little here and a little there is adding up inside our bodies to cause all sorts of growing issues each year. Children are reaching puberty earlier and earlier, cancer is becoming a norm, dementia and autism is more wide spread than ever. Let us try to limit the little bits so that they don't add up big.
BHA AND BHT
Butylated hydroxyanside and butylated hydroxytoluene are preservatives that manufacturers of dry goods with fat and oils have been putting in their packaging for freshness (longer shelf life) since 1980. Due to old labeling standards the manufacturers did not have to list it as it was not in the ingredients - just the packaging. More recent rules have forced the to list all preservatives regardless of where they are as long as they touch our food. As a result BHT AND BHA or now listed boldly in the ingredient list.
Please avoid as much as possible as it causes cancer and has been proven to interfere with hormone functions as it mimics estrogen. They are currently banned in Europe and are flagged for reassessment in Canada.
Please note the these chemical preservatives are in lipsticks and moisturizers. We are already absorbing it through our skin so please avoid ingesting it as well.
TSP - Trisodium Phosphate
This chemical preservative probably bothers me the most as i have used it on construction job sites. TSP has been known since the 1960's by professional contractors as an excellent wax and grease remover from walls and concrete. It is also used widely as a paint thinner.
In our bodies it reduces calcium, kidney function and is corrosive to our stomachs and bowels. It is deemed a hazardous substance and is used in cereal for freshness!
SUGAR AND CORN = GMO
Due to consumer health concerns most cereal manufacturers have lowered the fat content but they have also raised the sugar content to compensate for the taste changes. To add sweetness they used corn products that unfortunately are made from modified corn, soya and beet products or in other words; the dreaded GMO .
The Monsanto company produces chemical pesticides that we all started to reject due to health and environmental reasons so about 20 years ago Monsanto created corn seeds that had their product genetically modified to be in the corn's dna. So now we cannot even wash it off and it was so successful that almost all crops in the USA are GMO.
Watch for sugars listed in the ingredients that end in "ose" and anything with "corn" listed.
GMO food products cause infertility, immune problems such as allergies, MS and arthritis. Also known to accelerate aging of cells, diabetes due to insulin production being compromised and 60 other listed health risks.
The easy way to avoid these chemicals would be to purchase certified organic and wholesome cereals like Nature's Path or Kesha but the point of this blog is to find a way of eating well in spite of our failing food industry and still have funds left over to pay our ever increasing utility bills.
